What is the CTET Examination? Let’s understand its eligibility, syllabus, and other details.

The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is a national-level teacher eligibility examination in India, conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). This examination determines the eligibility of candidates for teaching at the primary level (Classes I–V) and the upper primary level (Classes VI–VIII). CTET is generally conducted twice a year, and candidates who qualify are eligible to apply for teaching positions in central government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), as well as in many state-run schools.

The CTET examination consists of two papers—Paper I (for Classes I–V) and Paper II (for Classes VI–VIII). Each paper carries a total of 150 marks, and the duration of the examination is 2 hours and 30 minutes. There are 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in each paper, with one mark awarded for each correct answer. Importantly, there is no negative marking.

In terms of syllabus, Paper I includes Child Development & Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies. Paper II includes Child Development & Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, and either Mathematics & Science (for candidates with a science background) or Social Studies/Social Science (for candidates with an arts background). The Child Development & Pedagogy section is particularly significant in both papers, as it covers educational psychology, teaching methodologies, and learning processes.

Regarding qualifying marks, candidates belonging to the General category must score at least 60%, which is 90 out of 150 marks. For reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/PwD), the qualifying mark is generally 55%, i.e., 82 out of 150 (subject to slight changes as per rules). The CTET certificate is now valid for a lifetime, allowing candidates to use it for teaching job applications multiple times in the future.

It is important to note that CTET is purely an eligibility test. Qualifying it does not guarantee a job; rather, it enables candidates to apply for teaching positions. For instance, clearing CTET is mandatory for becoming a teacher in central schools like KVS and NVS.

With regard to language selection, candidates can choose two languages—Language I and Language II. One of these is usually the candidate’s mother tongue or medium of instruction, while the other is a different language (such as English or Hindi). The language papers primarily include questions on comprehension, grammar, and pedagogy (methods of language teaching).

In terms of eligibility, candidates applying for Paper I must have at least a Higher Secondary qualification (with a minimum of 50% marks) along with a primary teacher training course such as D.El.Ed or B.El.Ed. For Paper II, candidates are generally required to have a Graduation degree along with a B.Ed. However, these criteria may be revised from time to time by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

A key feature of the CTET examination pattern is that it emphasizes conceptual understanding and pedagogy rather than rote learning. It tests not only subject knowledge but also teaching methods, students’ psychological development, and the learning process. Therefore, thorough preparation for the Child Development & Pedagogy section is essential.

Another important aspect is the cut-off and difficulty level. CTET is generally considered a moderate-level examination; however, since the questions are concept-based, they can sometimes be tricky. A high score (around 110–120 or above) can be advantageous in future teacher recruitment processes, as many institutions consider CTET scores while preparing merit lists.
