   Satyajit Ray, the son of the renowned children’s writer Sukumar Ray, was born on 2nd May 1921 in Kolkata. He received his early education at Santiniketan. Later, he graduated with Honours in Economics from Presidency College, Kolkata. His initiation into art and painting was under the guidance of Acharya Nandalal Bose.

   Ray achieved international recognition as a film director by adapting Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay’s novel Pather Panchali into a motion picture. In 1956, Pather Panchali was acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival as one of the greatest human documents of world cinema.

   In 1957, his film Aparajito won the prestigious Golden Lion along with the Jury’s Special Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Earlier, in 1958, he received the Golden Lion as the best award at an international film festival.

    In 1991, Satyajit Ray was honoured with the Academy Award (Oscar) for Lifetime Achievement, becoming the second Asian film director to receive this honour. He also earned numerous awards and accolades for his remarkable films such as Jalsaghar, Charulata, and Mahanagar.

    In June 1978, the University of Oxford conferred upon him an honorary Doctorate in recognition of his outstanding contribution to cinema. On 20th March 1992, the Government of India awarded him the country’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
